Case Differences

It is most likely that you are using Windows® platform for your coding purposes. If you are using any other unix based OS, then you wouldn't be facing this problem. The problem can be summerised as follows:

  • Windows is not case sensitive. 'fun.HTML' is same as 'FUN.htmL'
  • Most of the free servers like xoom.com have unix installed. Unix is case sensitive.
So if you have programmed your links, img tags etc. without considering the case, you will be in trouble... Your site will be working perfectly in your local disk. But when uploaded, it will be all trash...

Workaround for 'Case Differences'

  1. Save all your files in lower case.
  2. Code all the links(<a href="xxx">XXX</a>) img tags etc. in lower case.
  3. If you are using a high-end FTP client like Terrapin FTP, configure it to convert all files to lower case before uploading.
Ofcourse, the above points are just tips which I follow through my experience. If you follow any other philosophy(first letter capital), just follow that philosophy consistently throughout the site. But remember one thing, people don't like typing URL in capital. Thus they prefer:
http://www.indiwiz.com/web
to:
http://www.indiwiz.com/Web
Typing in capital are minor irritating experiences on the net. This, I am talking as an avid net surfer!
