This is THE best office suite in public domain (thanks to SUN for donating this code). It has every feature which one might need for his documentation/communication purpose. And the native format supported by this suite is the OASIS Open Document Format. This is a open XML based format, which can be opened by many applications and APIs.
This is the word-processor which I currently use in Linux. All the features of it are not yet implemented. You can start this program by:
$ abiword

As long as your work is confined within this, use this app. If your work needs heavy word processing (formatting multiple pages, tables etc.) give this a pass. Go for Corel WordPerfect 8 or Star Office Suite.

This is the spreadsheet program you are looking for in Linux! This uses the GTK+ interface. You can start this program by:
$ gnumeric
You can save your file in the following formats(among others):

Unlike other apps in Linux, you have a inbuilt help in this program which can be accessed from the menu. The syntax for formula is:

This is an open source console based spreadsheet. Like in Lotus123 press '/' for accessing menus. Last time I downloaded it from http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/apps/financial/spreadsheet/sc-7.16.tar.gz.
Under Windows, I have used more than 50 non-WYSIWYG HTML editors. August seems to combine all the best features of the editors I have tried, that too undex Linux... Some features:
